What is a stroke?

Stroke is a condition where the normal blood supply to the brain is impeded as a result of a blocked vessel or a rupture in a blood vessel within the brain. Symptoms of stroke

Symptoms of stroke can occur very suddenly with an almost immediate damaging effect on the body. Most common symptoms include; sudden numbness, weakness or loss of movement in the face, arm or leg, especially affecting one side of the body, inability to maintain balance, very severe headaches, visual impairment and speaking incoherently. Causes of Stroke

Ischemic strokes are caused by blockages in the narrow blood arteries within the brain. This is the most common types of strokes as it accounts for more than 85% of all cases. These blockages result from blood clots, or from fatty deposits in the blood that have flowed into the tiny arteries in the brain.

In cases of hemorrhagic strokes, the blood vessels in the brain are ruptured allowing blood to flow out into the brain and increases pressure on brain cells while also reducing the amount of blood delivered by the ruptured artery. The ruptures are caused by hypertension, trauma, blood-thinning medications, and aneurysms (weaknesses in blood vessel walls).

Transient ischemic attacks (TIA) are quite similar to ischemic strokes because the arteries are also blocked but in TIA, this blockage is partial and reduces the amount of blood flowing to the brain. People with TIA may have symptoms that go away in 24 hours, but they are very likely to have a serious stroke in the nearest future. 

Stroke treatment

Stroke treatment methods are usually focused on removing blood clots and allowing the free flow of blood within the brain. Some of these methods include:

Medication: Usually for ischemic strokes and TIA, drugs that break down clots are administered. An injection of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) is effective in dissolving clots. Medications are also used for hemorrhagic stroke treatment to reduce pressure in the brain and regulate the blood flow.

Surgery: A more expensive and very intricate stroke treatment is a brain surgery to remove clots or untangle arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) which occur where arteries and veins are wrapped around each together and are therefore susceptible to burst.
