The strategies to growing a small business should interest whoever needs financial freedom, which is the objective of this article. Building a bottom-up economy has always been the preoccupation of many governments and policymakers, as it is now common knowledge that the strength of a strong economy lies in the firm foundation that is composed of vibrant small businesses.

In a developing country like Nigeria, small businesses make up the lifeblood of national development as it is the major source of livelihood for millions of households, even as they play an important role in providing goods and services directly to the consumers.

But a casual walk around the streets will take you past many small businesses that have dotted almost every residential area in Nigeria. There are so many of them, most of which are owned by people that are struggling to make ends meet, as they barely earn enough from the business to keep it afloat and to take care of their family. Only a few distinguish themselves to become very successful outfits, which then expand and grow into big businesses with several employees,  and boost the wealth profile of the owner.

Strategies to growing a small business 

If you are the owner of a small business, or you are contemplating on starting one, then it is very likely that you do not aim to always remain small, as every man is desirable of growth and increase. Your vision is to start with little and then working up to become great, this is very possible, but you must give careful consideration to the following tips to growing a small business:

•    Think big:

You cannot begin and sustain any business venture successfully without having a clear vision of the path you want to take and the goal you aim to reach. The same applies to starting a small business; you must have a vision of a great business in mind and develop a clear and feasible plan of how to grow a small business.

•    Invest wisely:

In starting a small business, choose an area of business that you have some expertise in and are able to take enough risk that will bring in future profits. Your small business should not be based solely on the success of a similar business, you should try to create a niche for your business, and build on your uniqueness.

•    Service Quality:

The level of success for a small business depends largely on the quality of service delivered. Focus on maintaining a very high standard of service delivery for your customers that will keep them coming back and buying more.

•    Be Frugal:

To become successful with your small business, you must understand the importance of being thrifty. In starting out, never buy anything for the sake of luxury, be very practical with your expenses, and buy only when it is necessary for business growth. Try to be frugal with spending your little earnings, save more and when you are tempted to splash some cash after a very good business day, save more! This will help you to build as there will always be resources to push you through hard times. It’s an effective strategy to growing a small business.

•    Seize Opportunities:

While operating your small business, be on the lookout for opportunities to growing a small business, have plans for expansion and find more innovative ways of leveraging your business. Consider how the internet can help your business grow further to reach even more people with needed products and services.
