How to Experience Happiness through Gratitude
Yes, we can experience happiness through gratitude! I have come to the conviction that having a mind of appreciation in every situation is the key to eternal bliss. It goes a long way to determine whether we shall be happy or sad, experience good health or sickness, and attract wealth or poverty. The essence of this content is to throw light on gratitude based on my understanding with the hope that we can consciously use the power to our advantage.
Melody Beattie, with her word, hit the hammer on the head: “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, and confusion into clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house, a home, or a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
Many people ignorantly deprive themselves of happiness through Gratitude by not appreciating the good things happening in their lives and blaming others for their predicament. In the process, they attract more problems, and their good things are taken away from them. People with the right attitude to their concerns and seeing it as an opportunity to move forward tend to attract more goodness and goodwill. Therefore, they deprive themselves of experiencing happiness through Gratitude.
Take your eyes away from reading for some moment and try to reflect on the lives of people you know who continuously complain and blame others for their problems. Examples are sickness, poverty, etc. You will see that they are never out of difficulties. Sometimes when they think the problem is over, it manifests in a different form.
Why is gratitude important to our lives?
All spiritual books, philosophers and people who are intuitively alert have discovered that gratitude ensures our eternal happiness if applied in our daily activities.
For instance, several verses in the bible and the Koran emphasize the importance of gratitude for our spiritual progress.
The Bible 1 Thessalonians 5:16 – 18 admonishes us continually to be joyful, pray, and give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
The Quran Surah Ibrahim 14:7, it is stated that if you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. If you are ungrateful, my chastisement is truly severe.
An American new thought writer, Wallace D. Wattles, lived from 1860–1911. He wrote on experiencing happiness through gratitude, stating: “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”
Emmet Fox, an Irish New Thought spiritual leader of the early 20th century who lived from 30 July 1886 – 13 August 1951, said: “Bless a thing, and it will bless you. Curse it, and it will curse you. If you bless a situation, it has no power to hurt you. Even if it is troublesome for a time, it will gradually fade if you sincerely bless it.”
The Grail Message on Experiencing Happiness through Gratitude
My explanation is that gratitude in everything is the key to happiness. It would not be complete if I did not refer to the grail message, which is the source of my knowledge.
The grail message explains the three fundamental laws guiding creation. The law of sowing, the law of attraction of homogeneous species and the law of spiritual gravity elaborate on how it relates to gratitude. We, the human spirits, are spiritual farmers because we have the free will to apply these laws to sow whatever pleases us. And we are compelled to enjoy its harvest, whether good or bad.
The message helps us to know that whatever we are experiencing today is based on what we have sown in the past. Therefore, if we are experiencing good things, we should be grateful to the almighty father through whose power we use to sow good seeds.
If the experiences are not palatable, we should accept responsibility for it and thank God for the opportunity to redeem them and overcome our weaknesses.
You commit more sins when you complain and blame others for your problems. You are still sowing more evil seeds, which will attract more bitter experiences. Thus you deprive yourself of experiencing happiness through gratitude.
Finally, here is an extraction from the Grail message taken from volume 1, page 35 in the lecture Awake: “Therefore become spiritually free! Burst all the fetters that hold you down! If obstacles present themselves, welcome them joyfully, for they show you the way to freedom and strength! Look upon them as gifts you will benefit from, and you will overcome them with ease.
Either such obstacles are put in your way to teach and develop you. In which case, you add to the means of your ascent, or they are the reaction to some debt you have incurred, which you can redeem in this way and thus free yourselves. In either case, they help you to advance. Therefore set out to meet them with a bold heart; it is for your good.”
