Phlebitis Treatment, Symptoms and Causes

Phlebitis Treatment: The human circulatory system is made up of an intricate network of vessels that enable the passage of blood throughout the whole body. This flow of blood helps in providing oxygen and nutrients which are required for the processes of metabolism in each cell of the body. So whenever any part of the circulatory system becomes inflamed, it can cause a disruption in the normal flow of blood; this can happen in cases of phlebitis.

What is Phlebitis?

Phlebitis is the inflammation of the veins as a result of a collection of blood on the walls of a blood vessel. When phlebitis is caused by a blood clot in the vein, it is medically referred to as thrombophlebitis and this can either be superficial; when it occurs on the surface of the vein, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when it occurs in deeper veins beyond the skin surface.

In most cases, superficial thrombophlebitis is benign as it does not raise any serious concerns except the discomfort it creates in forming lumps on the skin. Cases of DVT can present far more serious health issues as a blood clot in deep-lying veins will obstruct normal blood flow and can result in high blood pressure, strokes and even organ failure, all of which are life-threatening conditions.

Phlebitis occurs most commonly in the lower limbs and can occasionally cause painful sensations.

Symptoms of Phlebitis

Phlebitis will usually cause visible lumps, with a reddish colouration which traces the course of the vein under the skin. There can also be signs of fever that is associated either with superficial or deep vein phlebitis. The site of thrombophlebitis can also become infected with pus draining from the area, this is referred to as septic thrombophlebitis.

Deep vein thrombosis can cause redness and swelling in the affected area and can even restrict movement when it occurs in the legs.

Causes of Phlebitis

The condition may be as a result of several causes, especially problems that are related to blood clots within the veins, most common causes include:

•    Varicose veins: Phlebitis occurs commonly among people with varicose or dilated veins, this makes it easier for clots to form and clog the walls of the veins.

•    Obesity: Having high amounts of cholesterol can also contribute to developing phlebitis, the condition is quite common in obese people as they tend to have varicose veins and fat deposits could also lead to blot clots in the veins.

•    Medications: Certain drugs are known to cause phlebitis as they tend to instigate blood clots, this can be a side effect of some contraceptive pills.

•    Intravenous drips and injections: Drips and injections which are inserted into the veins can also trigger tiny blood clots leading to phlebitis in that area of the body.

•    Pregnancy: Pregnant women are susceptible to having phlebitis as small blood clots can form in areas around the abdomen and legs.

•    Immobility: Being on bed rest for an extended period can also make a person to develop phlebitis. As the body is largely inactive, blood clots can form in some superficial veins.

Phlebitis Treatment

Most cases of superficial phlebitis are benign and pose no health risk apart from the lumps around the skin that may affect your physical appearance. But DVT can be a major cause of concern. Below are some effective phlebitis treatment:

•    Exercise: Engaging in regular physical exercise and activities can help cut down the risk of having phlebitis as this minimizes the occurrence of blood clots.

•    Cold press and stockings: It’s a form of phlebitis treatment. You can apply an ice-pack press on the affected area to reduce inflammations and sooth pains. Compression stockings can also be worn to reduce inflammations.

•    Anti-inflammatory painkillers: Since phlebitis is just an inflammation and not necessarily an infection, antibiotics are ineffective. But taking anti-inflammatory painkillers will help reduce cases of pains associated with the condition.

•    Herbs: The natural anti-inflammatory factors of herbs make them a very potent option for phlebitis treatment. Herbal supplements are also available to help prevent blood clots without leaving any harmful side effects.
