Symptoms of erysipelas

Like most skin bacterial infections, erysipelas infection often starts with a feverish condition, marked by chills, shivering and high temperature. Then the affected skin area appears red, swollen and shiny, which will feel warm and tender when touched. The colouration could turn purple with the presence of blisters in severe cases of erysipelas.

Causes of erysipelas

Skin infections occur when bacteria penetrate the skin surfaces. The following conditions aid it:

  • Wounds: Having cuts, sores, and even insect bites that are not adequately taken care of can create an entry point for a bacterial infection. Surgical wounds that are not correctly tended can also result in severe cases of erysipelas.
  • Poor hygiene: It is vital to keep the skin clean by taking a bath twice daily, especially on a hot, humid day when you tend to sweat more. A dirty, sweaty skin provides suitable conditions for the buildup of skin bacteria.
  • Skin conditions: The presence of other skin conditions such as impetigo and eczema predisposes the skin to bacterial infections.

Treatment for skin infections

Fortunately, almost all bacterial skin infections, including erysipelas, are curable. Treatment must begin immediately before any symptoms are noticed to prevent further complications.

  • Antibiotics: Treatment of skin infection bacteria often involve drug prescriptions that help reduce the effects of the bacteria. These may include antibiotics like penicillin and erythromycin. In severe cases, a drip may pass antibiotics to the skin.
  • Treat wounds: Any open injuries on the skin should be treated immediately. You use antiseptics to cleanse the wound surface and bandages to cover open sores to prevent bacterial infections.
