How to Cure Syphilis: It's a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is highly contagious, i.e. very easily spread from one infected person to another. It has also been found to be sent through close body contact, long kissing and open sores or wounds on an infected person's body.
Syphilis spreads very fast and is a silent killer, as an infected person may not notice any signs of syphilis until the disease is in its latter stages and caused extensive health problems in the body. That's the reason you need information on how to cure syphilis.
A bacteria known as Treponema pallidum carries the syphilis infection in humans, and it is easily transmitted from one infected person to another through sex.
Syphilis can also be transmitted from a mother to her unborn baby in congenital syphilis. It is the cause of many stillbirths, where the baby dies in the womb, and delivered babies are born with deformities, with most dying shortly after birth.
The infection can bring about serious health problems that include blindness, arthritis, brain damage and death. Syphilis had claimed so many lives, especially in the 1940s when an effective treatment was yet to be discovered. So information on how to cure syphilis is essential.
The infection continues to cause serious health challenges with its rapid spread and late diagnosis, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. A growing number of cases have been recorded in the past decade. It has been attributed to the prevalence of HIV, which weakens the immune system making it susceptible to syphilis and other opportunistic infections.
Signs of Syphilis
The symptoms appear in four different stages depending on the severity of the infection. There are the primary, secondary, latent and tertiary stages.
The primary stage of the infection is characterised by small, painless sores that appear primarily on the sex organs (e.g. penis) and in the inner and outer areas of the mouth. In the secondary stage, rashes appear on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet with moist warts in the groin region.
Latent syphilis, as the name implies, remains latent or invisible as the body is infected but without any visible symptoms. Neurological and cardiac problems mark the tertiary stage. It can lead to blindness, brain damage, arthritis, heart attack and death if the necessary treatment is not administered promptly.
A blood test detects syphilis in a hospital or health centre.
Sexually active individuals and pregnant mothers are advised to carry out this test, even before any symptom is noticed, as the procedure is quick and inexpensive.
Treatment usually involves an appropriate dosage of antibiotics and tetracycline.
Some herbal food supplements are now available and are preferred for their effectiveness in treating syphilis.
And until the infection is cleared from the body system, as confirmed by further tests, patients are strongly advised to abstain from having sex.
Also, sexual partners of an infected person are to be tested and treated for syphilis as they are most likely to be infected.
